What are the emerging species?
Emerging species are farmed animal species with growing production potential but currently limited genotype-to-phenotype (G2P) research infrastructure — spanning insects, marine invertebrates, and under-studied breeds within more established groups like ruminants, finfish, and poultry. Within EuroFAANG, they represent species where G2P knowledge, tools, and data lag behind the conventional livestock sector, despite their importance for diversifying protein sources and enabling circular-economy farming.
This hub brings together everyone across Europe currently active in genotype-to-phenotype (G2P) research on emerging farmed species — starting with our interactive insect map, plus a directory of institutions and companies working on marine invertebrates, under-studied fish, livestock, and poultry.
